On November 7th, golfers teed off at the Barney & Barney Foundation’s 5th Annual Bay Area Golf Tournament at Sequoyah Country Club. With the support of our sponsors, players, and volunteers, the tournament proved to be our most successful one to date. Not only did we have the highest tournament turnout yet, but we also broke previous fundraising records. Click here to view photos from the event.

The Barney & Barney Foundation holds the tournament each year to raise awareness and provide grants to local non-profit organizations. Since its inception in 2009, the Barney & Barney Foundation has awarded nearly $2 Million in charitable grants.

This year, the Foundation awarded a total of $70,000 to two inspiring Bay Area non-profit organizations: Junior Achievement of Northern California and Girls Inc. of Alameda County.

Junior Achievement of Northern California helps provide youth with the skills they need to succeed in adulthood. Participants learn about finding a job, starting a business, and managing money. Junior Achievement is dedicated to preparing our youth for their dream career and will use their grant to further fulfill their goal of building a better workforce of tomorrow.

On September 29th, the Barney & Barney Foundation got its groove on and Rocked the Foundation once again. Back for its 7th year, the 2016 Rock the Foundation annual benefit concert proved to be our best one yet! From the cool tunes of headliner Atomic Groove to the fabulous silent auction packages to the interactive GIF photo booth, it was a night to remember. We’d like to thank all of our sponsors, attendees, donors, and volunteers for helping to make this event a smashing success.

In addition to all the fun, the Barney & Barney Foundation was fortunate enough to honor four inspiring San Diego non-profit organizations and awarded a total of $110,000 in grants. Since its inception in 2009, the Barney & Barney Foundation has awarded nearly $2 Million in charitable grants.

Women’s Resource Center received the largest grant of the evening— $50,000 —which will help support their mission. This organization is dedicated to providing the highest quality supportive services, counseling, shelter, and education to North San Diego County women, children, and men involved in or threatened by domestic violence or sexual assault. Marsh & McLennan Agency Associates Give Back: 2016 Rock the Foundation Grant Recipient Volunteer Events

By Jennifer Swartz, Communications Associate

clock September 19, 2016 at 10:00 AM

Over the past couple of months, Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) associates volunteered with two of our 2016 Barney & Barney Foundation Grant Recipients – Women’s Resource Center and Social Advocates for Youth, both based in San Diego. Associates had the opportunity to spend some time with these inspiring organizations and witness firsthand the incredible mark they make on our community. Both will be honored and awarded grants on Thursday, September 29 at the 2016 Rock the Foundation benefit concert.

Women’s Resource Center is dedicated to providing quality supportive services, counseling, shelter, and education to North San Diego County women, children, and men involved in or threatened by domestic violence or assault. During MMA's volunteer day, associates were able to walk through Women’s Resource Center’s facility and get a better understanding of how their services impact their clients. Additionally, associates got the chance to help spruce up the shelters, doing everything from painting fences to building furniture.

Volunteering at the Women’s Resource Center allowed me to see and learn about an incredibly important service within the San Diego community. The staff was extremely appreciative of our time, and it was great meeting new co-workers along the way too. - Katie Pierce, Compensation Consultant

I was moved by how Women’s Resource Center has made a safe and supportive facility for women in need. It was so great to see so many people helping as well, from painting fences to sanding the handrails on the stairs! It was an honor to help “spruce-up” their facility for this wonderful organization. - Andrew DaSilva, Benefit Analyst

MMAGROW Welcomes Ramona Pierson as Bay Area's Inaugural Keynote Speaker

By Jennifer Swartz, Communications Associate

clock October 26, 2015 at 1:00 PM

This past summer, MMA GROW* hosted its Inaugural Bay Area Keynote Speaker Event at Franklin Templeton Investment's San Mateo Campus. The organization welcomed keynote speaker Ramona Pierson, Co-founder and CEO of Declara, a tech startup that is revolutionizing the way people share knowledge. Declara aims to shape the future by focusing on what is possible instead of impossible, a mission inspired by Ramona’s own story of resilience in the face of extreme adversity.

At the age of only 16, Ramona, a mathematics prodigy, attended the University of California, Berkeley where just two years later she was recruited by the Marines to write algorithms aiding F-18 fighter missions. Four years later, tragedy struck. Ramona was hit by a drunk driver while running and spent the following eighteen months in a coma and the next eleven years blind. This life-changing event forced her to relearn simple human functions: everything from breathing and seeing to walking and smiling. Refusing to let the accident hold her back, Ramona used the many skills and insights she gained during her recovery to propel her forward. Her experiences fostered the drive and determination in her to build two companies where personalized learning and relearning are the center of all products.
