Marsh & McLennan Agency associates recently volunteered with three of our 2015 Barney & Barney Foundation Grant Recipients – Women Helping Women/Men 2 Work in Orange County, Partnerships with Industry in San Diego and Urban Releaf in Oakland. Associates had the opportunity to spend some time with each of these outstanding organizations, chip in, and witness the impact that these organizations make on our communities. These remarkable non-profits are three of seven deserving organizations receiving grants at this year’s Rock the Foundation benefit concert.
Here’s a recap of our volunteer efforts:
Dressed for Success in Orange County
Located in Santa Ana, Women Helping Women/Men 2 Work (WHW) provides unemployed and underemployed individuals the skills and resources needed to secure a job. During MMA's volunteer event, associates got the opportunity to team up with WHW clients and serve as their personal shoppers to pick out interview outfits. Once each client made their choice and dressed in their new professional attire, the clients and associates participated in mock interviews, offering the job seekers a chance to practice their interview skills.
Following these activities, Principal Chuck Rosenberger, Barney & Barney Foundation Executive Director Arlene Lieberman and MMA associates held a Q&A session. Clients asked detailed questions and associates shared their experiences about the interview process and tips for success after being hired.
Helping Julia pick out clothes for her upcoming interview and watching the confidence in her eyes grow made me feel so happy and excited for her future. Giving individuals practice with their interviewing skills brought me joy as I saw how much some encouragement and positive feedback could shape an interview outcome for them. My experience of volunteering at WHW left me feeling incredibly rewarded, and I would definitely volunteer at WHW again! – Analisia Cook, Insurance Associate
We could literally see the direct impact we had on the clients as soon as they put on a professional outfit. They all stood taller, looked more confident, and you could almost see them getting rejuvenated with a sense of hope that they were going to overcome whatever obstacles that might be in their way. – Jennifer Swartz, Communications Assistant
Supporting New Friends in San Diego
Partnerships with Industry (PWI) creates jobs for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Working with businesses throughout San Diego County, PWI strategically places its clients in positions where they can thrive.
Every other month, PWI hosts a social event for its clients ranging from talent shows to movie nights. Barney & Barney associates had the chance to set up for the latest karaoke event and serve dinner to the PWI clients who rewarded our volunteers with karaoke performances afterward.
Wow did they put on a show. The enthusiasm these folks had was contagious to say the least. The clients that work at PWI take their jobs very seriously and have so much pride in what they produce. – Jenny Rappold, Client Manager
It was so heartwarming to meet with and watch the clients have so much fun singing karaoke and enjoying their night. During our tour of the facilities, I was really impressed with how well run this organization is and how their focus is on their clients’ abilities, not disabilities. – Lisa Houston, Client Administrator
Planting Trees in Oakland
Urban Releaf’s history is rooted in revitalizing urban neighborhoods through research-based programs that bring trees back to the community. This organization is committed to planting trees, offering environmental education, sponsoring youth, and empowering residents to help beautify and restore their community.
During this hands-on event, our associates rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside the Urban Releaf team to plant trees. Marsh & McLennan Agency associates saw firsthand how this organization transforms communities by both bringing people together and “growing and greening” Oakland. The trees that our associates planted outside of a local elementary school not only beautified the area, but will also provide a learning opportunity for students who will be responsible for caring for the trees throughout the school year.
It was great to see how a few people could make such a difference in the beautification and environmental quality of this community in just a few hours. It was inspiring to be involved in something that will benefit the community for many years to come. Urban Releaf clearly loved what they were doing, and we loved helping them achieve their goals. – Joy Shows, Graphic Designer
Yesterday’s tree planting with Urban Releaf was a real breath of fresh air; not only because we were planting trees to help beautify the neighborhood and to provide positive environmental impacts, but because when the job was done, we could stand back and see the result of our hard work. – Ryan Spink, Client Executive
