Over the past couple of months, Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) associates volunteered with two of our 2016 Barney & Barney Foundation Grant Recipients – Women’s Resource Center and Social Advocates for Youth, both based in San Diego. Associates had the opportunity to spend some time with these inspiring organizations and witness firsthand the incredible mark they make on our community. Both will be honored and awarded grants on Thursday, September 29 at the 2016 Rock the Foundation benefit concert.
Women’s Resource Center is dedicated to providing quality supportive services, counseling, shelter, and education to North San Diego County women, children, and men involved in or threatened by domestic violence or assault. During MMA's volunteer day, associates were able to walk through Women’s Resource Center’s facility and get a better understanding of how their services impact their clients. Additionally, associates got the chance to help spruce up the shelters, doing everything from painting fences to building furniture.
Volunteering at the Women’s Resource Center allowed me to see and learn about an incredibly important service within the San Diego community. The staff was extremely appreciative of our time, and it was great meeting new co-workers along the way too. - Katie Pierce, Compensation Consultant
I was moved by how Women’s Resource Center has made a safe and supportive facility for women in need. It was so great to see so many people helping as well, from painting fences to sanding the handrails on the stairs! It was an honor to help “spruce-up” their facility for this wonderful organization. - Andrew DaSilva, Benefit Analyst
Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) strives to partner with youth, adults, families, and communities to help them reach their full potential. Their holistic approach serves the whole child from pre-natal to adulthood with programs that emphasize prevention, early intervention, and positive development. MMA associates were fortunate enough to get a glimpse of SAY’s programs, as well as assist SAY with cleaning up their thrift shop at O’Farrell Community School. Associates rolled up their sleeves, sorting through household objects and creating a new organization system to make shopping at the thrift shop a better and more seamless experience.
The thrift store cleanup project was a great opportunity to interact and bond with people from other departments. I hadn’t considered that while these families struggle to feed their children, they also struggle to provide basic household items, like sheets and towels. The thrift store is such a great asset to these families – everyone deserves to sleep a little better on a nice set of sheets. - Rachelle Taylor, Client Administrator
It fills me with joy to see so many of my co-workers give their time to help out in the community. It's nice to know that because we organized the storage unit, it will now be easier to find things and perhaps become more efficient when giving out supplies to families. - Nicholas Soriano, Benefit Service Associate
