On May 2, 2017, GROW* hosted its 2nd Bay Area Keynote Speaker Event at Franklin Templeton Investment's San Mateo Campus. The organization was delighted to welcome Debbie Haliday, a former UCLA athlete turned coach and proud wife and mother of three. Her intimate, engaging, and humorous presentation left the audience with the inspiring message that today is everything.
As a young woman, Debbie had dreams to excel as a collegiate athlete. She was accepted to the University of California, Los Angeles, where she played basketball and softball. Freshman year at UCLA was when her dreams really came true, as she played for both sports programs and won national championships on both teams. Not too long after college, Debbie stepped in as the head coach of the Women’s Basketball Team at Biola University, and after a successful career coaching and mentoring, she is now back at UCLA as the Women’s Basketball Program Assistant.
Throughout her presentation, Debbie shared many personal stories and life lessons. First, she encouraged the audience to not only live their dream, but to also know when to sacrifice. Debbie next focused on the concept of loving your purpose. Through a brief breakout discussion, Debbie challenged the audience to really think about their “why” – why do you exist and what makes you get up every day. After corralling everyone back together, she explained that it cannot only be about knowing your “why”, but also loving and embracing your why. That combination is key.
Lastly, Debbie touched on the importance of listening to the right voices and how critical that is for personal and professional growth. In this fast-paced world, it is vital to be able to discern which internal and external voices to listen to. “We need people who are truth tellers, as hard as it is to hear. But we also need balcony people, the ones who are going to cheer you on and encourage you.” explained Debbie. “Balance the voices coming at you, including your own.“
In her inspirational close, Debbie reminded the audience to weed out the negative thoughts and make each day our masterpiece, highlighting that we are in control of our own destiny, our attitude is our choice, and bettering our craft starts with bettering yourself.
