On June 7, 2018 I have the privilege of representing Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) in sponsoring the Bay Area CFO of the Year Awards presented by the San Francisco Business Times and Larkin Street Youth Services. As a Board member of Larkin Street, I am proud to support this nonprofit’s ground-breaking work, while honoring world-class CFOs leading their organizations.
Held in San Francisco, this annual event brings together 500 business and community leaders who support Larkin Street’s terrific work. Over the past 13 years, this event has raised $5.2 million for the organization, which is committed to helping homeless youth turn their lives around.
The Power Of Partnerships
This year’s theme, leveraging partnerships to accelerate financial leadership, is especially relevant in today’s business environment and important to us here at MMA.
At MMA, we see that partnerships often result in more than the sum of their parts. Whether it is private sector companies working together, or nonprofits partnering with the private sector, well-conceived partnerships are often mutually beneficial for both organizations and their stakeholders.
In my experience working with CFOs and HR professionals, the best results occur when there is a shared passion and end goal. My team and I listen carefully to understand needs and recommend the best course of action that will help our client achieve their goal in a way that is both strategic and cost effective. Occasionally, when client needs fall outside our scope of business, we leverage our wide network of resources and third party partnerships to ensure we can deliver the best solution for our clients.
With the right partner, in business or in the community, goals can be achieved with lasting results. This is true of my own experience working with Larkin Street and witnessing the impact they are making with Bay Area youth.
I first became a volunteer with Larkin Street seven years ago. As my appreciation for Larkin Street grew and my work with innovative finance and HR teams in the Bay Area continued, I was approached by then-Board Chair Laura Powell to discuss ways I could get involved at the leadership level. Four years ago, I was selected to serve on the board and help guide this outstanding organization. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to serve on the Board executive committee and as co-chair of the CFO Awards.
My work with Larkin Street and with Bay Area employers has reinforced the notion that harnessing the power of partnerships is just another way to change the world for the better.
