Marsh & McLennan Agency Partners with 2014 Rock the Foundation Grant Recipients
Continuing our tradition of giving back to the community, Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) associates recently volunteered with three of our 2014 Barney & Barney Foundation Grant Recipients - Outdoor Outreach in San Diego, Ocean Institute in Orange County and Raphael House in San Francisco. Working in partnership with each organization, associates had the opportunity to participate hands-on and witness first-hand the services and support these organizations provide to better our communities. These non-profits are three of nine organizations receiving grants at this year’s Rock the Foundation benefit concert.
Here’s a recap of our volunteer efforts with each non-profit:
Beach Clean Up with New Friends in San Diego
Outdoor Outreach transforms lives by connecting at-risk youth to the outdoors. Through activities like rock climbing, surfing or mountain biking, at-risk and underprivileged middle and high-school aged youth gain the tools to help recognize opportunity in their own lives and set and achieve goals.
Working alongside new friends from Barrio Logan College Institute and Outdoor Outreach, associates picked up trash at Border Field State Park, collecting refuse to promote cleaner waterways and preserve beach wildlife.
“I really enjoyed that MMA not only made the beach cleaner, but brightened the kids’ day with ice cream and gifts. I was surprised at what an impact an afternoon of picking up trash made on the beach.” – Brittany Hale, Client Administrator – International
“The beach clean-up was an eye opening experience for me and I’m sure for most MMA employees that were lucky enough to participate in such an amazing event. In just one hour of trash pick-up, my three-person team had over two buckets full of miscellaneous trash. We found mostly micro trash, like plastic bottle caps, and even found a whole collection of balloons, which would have ended up in the ocean.” – Chelsea John, Benefit Service Associate
Getting Hands-On in Orange County
Dana Point-based Ocean Institute is an ocean education organization offering hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs.
Our volunteers collected large refuse and micro trash at the nearby beach and reserve and painted benches as part of a beautification project to help maintain the facility for thousands of daily visitors.
“It was wonderful to know that our little efforts were going to further the large cause of education and inspiration of students and the community. The Ocean Institute is doing fantastic work, and it was an honor to play a small part in helping them with their mission. Plus it was fun!” – David Whalley, Client Executive
“This was my first time volunteering for an organization like this and I really enjoyed the experience. From the surface, the surrounding area looked clean and beautiful, yet the nooks and crannies of the surroundings had trash that we found. It was a great experience and very rewarding!” – Jaymee Kelso, Client Manager
Rolling Up Our Sleeves in San Francisco
Raphael House provides at-risk families the opportunity to take ownership of their future by providing a safe home and supportive programs to get them back on their feet.
At the San Francisco residential shelter, associates chipped in by applying a fresh coat of paint to the facility and worked hard in the kitchen prepping dinner for the 28 families that call Raphael House home.
"It was a pleasure to participate in helping the Raphael House paint the kitchen and help prepare food for the residents. Working alongside the staff I felt the sense of pride and respect they have in helping these families succeed." – Joy Shows, Graphic Designer
