Making the Math Work: Inside the Head of CFO Steve Berk

By Erin Swain, Corporate Communications Director

clock February 29, 2016 at 10:00 AM

Marsh & McLennan Agency Western Region CFO, Steve Berk, has spent the last three decades (and counting) with the same company. If words like “predictable” or “uneventful” come to mind when you hear about his long-term tenure with the firm, you don’t know Steve very well. We recently sat down with him to discuss his CFO journey, an unexpected detour into sales, and what he sees as the most important business opportunities CFOs need to navigate today.

After starting his career as a CPA with Deloitte & Touche, Steve joined Marsh where he held various finance roles, ultimately becoming Western Regional CFO in 1992. He enjoyed his years in finance but after the heartbreaking loss of a number of his colleagues in the World Trade Center in 2001 and growing weary of ongoing travel, in 2005, Steve declared a need for a change.

Unwilling to lose a dynamic leader, Marsh asked Steve to run the sales division in Portland. The request seemed unconventional at first, but with his experience as CFO, Steve knew exactly what kept prospects up at night. With his CFO insider knowledge and extroverted personality, Steve proved to be the perfect candidate to reenergize sales. Soon, Steve was made head of sales for Marsh’s Western Region.

Fast forward to Steve’s relocation to San Diego in 2009, his career would soon come full circle. In 2014, Marsh & McLennan Agency acquired Barney & Barney and folded in much of Steve’s Marsh office a year later. With CEO Paul Hering and COO/President Hal Dunning’s roles expanding, Steve was the perfect addition to the team – once again as CFO.

We sat down with Steve to get some insight on his experience as CFO.

How does your sales experience help you in your role as CFO?

Associate Spotlight: Nadine Varga

By Daniela Posada, Corporate Recruiter

clock June 22, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Each quarter, Marsh & McLennan Agency recognizes employees who were caught delivering more than expected. Meet Nadine Varga, the Contract Administrator and Corporate Paralegal in our Support Division and learn more about why associates who go the distance decide to do so with Marsh & McLennan Agency.

Originally from New Jersey, Nadine Varga earned degrees in English and Political Science, which eventually spurred her career as a paralegal in Washington D.C. During her time in D.C., 9/11 struck the city and hit very close to home for her. After an emotionally intense time during the aftermath, Nadine began searching for jobs in California. She eventually moved out to Orange County where she learned litigation and fell in love with it.

While Nadine was searching for a role in an in-house legal department, she stumbled on B&B right at the perfect moment. Two weeks after she was hired, Nadine began working on due diligence for the MMA acquisition that took place in February 2014...and we couldn’t have done it without her! As our Contract Administrator and Corporate Paralegal, Nadine Varga now works closely with MMA Corporate Compliance.

Working at Marsh & McLennan Agency is a refreshing change for Nadine after working so many years at law firms that were driven solely by the bottom line. “I feel this company truly cares about their associates.  It is like working for a company with a heart.  With MMA,  there is more of an even exchange, where one nourishes the other. It is truly a living testament to this nourishment when you are surrounded by co-workers who have worked at Barney & Barney for 10, 20, 30, 40+ years.  This company is obviously doing something very right!”

Associate Spotlight: Mary Simpson

By Daniela Posada, Corporate Recruiter

clock January 5, 2015 at 10:00 AM

After working in a variety of positions at many different companies, Mary wanted to find a company where she could stay until retirement, so she decided to be picky. Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) matched each of her criteria for the perfect company—MMA offers opportunities to work with positive-minded people, a challenging environment, and is a place where people are genuinely happy to come to work each day. “Management places trust in us, so we feel that we have the authority to serve and support our clients, which is empowering.”

Mary loves the mixture of ages at the firm. “There are 20-somethings and 40-somethings which make it really exciting. I have people with more experience than me to learn from and I also see the excitement the new people bring.” She also values the importance MMA places on work-life balance. “Personal life comes first here, since it’s about a long term path not a short term burn out. If you need anything, MMA is there, which is tremendously important.”

What You Didn’t Know About Mary

During grad school, Mary joined a rock-n-roll cover band as the lead singer. She was with them for 18 months, playing gigs all over the Bay Area. “Covering Pat Benatar was always fun”.

With the push from her active husband and daughter, Mary has become a bit of an adventurist in the past 5 years. So far, she’s gone ice climbing and kayaking near glaciers in Alaska, and zip lining, bungee jumping and waterfall rappelling in Costa Rica. Although she wouldn’t have put these on her bucket list, her family keeps her on her toes with trips all over the world. What’s up next? A hardcore kayaking expedition in Canada and a family trip to Europe so her husband can fulfill his dream of picking up a new BMW from Germany.

Associate Spotlight: Chris Wilson

By Daniela Posada, Corporate Recruiter

clock October 6, 2014 at 10:00 AM

Ohio Native Comes to California

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Chris Wilson followed his high school sweetheart to West Virginia University and finally out to California, where they married in 2010. During college summers, he interned at a family friends’ insurance brokerage in Ohio in the employee benefits department doing marketing and account management, which is when he realized he wanted to get into insurance sales.

After moving out to California a couple years after graduation and working at two different brokerages, Chris was referred to Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) through recommendations from the carriers he did business with. Driven by the reputation of MMA and his desire to dive deeper into sales, Chris used LinkedIn connections to get in touch with one of MMA's principals. Chris compares MMA to his company in Ohio, with its great leadership and mentors, but thinks MMA “completely surpasses that with its culture, leadership and work environment”.

Opportunity for Growth

“Whatever department you choose, there are opportunities to grow. I saw an opportunity, picked it up, and ran with it. I didn’t know anything about insurance, but having support and encouragement from mentors allowed me to learn. I love helping others. I treat their situations like I would my own—like I’m talking to my mom or my sister, because they don’t know, just like I didn’t know anything about insurance coming into MMA.”

“Not only does Marsh & McLennan Agency want growth for everyone, they also take the time to promote growth for women in a male-dominated industry. The leadership in the G.R.O.W. and Inspire mentor programs is great and it puts a smile on my face to see this happening. I look at these women and think, ‘They’re people. They did it. So can I’.”

Company Culture

“I call us the Brady Bunch. Everyone is unique and fun. I strive to smile or laugh once a day at work and in my personal life. At the end of the day you have to be able to laugh.”
