In 2014, Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) hired 79 new associates, and so far we are on track to surpass that growth trend in 2015. Brian McMann, Recruitment Manager at MMA since 2008, gives us the inside scoop on what he looks for in the next MMA associate and what new hires can expect once they become part of the team.
What do you look for in candidates?
For all of our open positions, I look for candidates that are career-oriented, professional, motivated, accountable and have the aptitude and excitement to learn. For sales roles, I would also add dynamic, focused, persistent, fearless, and being big-picture oriented. Those attributes are the differentiators for us. Don’t get me wrong - technical knowledge is important. But knowledge and expertise can always be acquired and developed. Possessing these key qualities as a foundation, however, generally makes a person a great fit for our team.
What makes Marsh & McLennan Agency unique?
The people are engaged and passionate, which creates a great working environment. There is also a ton of opportunity for growth and development. We have been growing steadily for years, which makes it possible to advance within the company, take on more responsibility and earn more money.
We also have a Personal Excellence Program (P.E.P. ) led by our organizational learning team. Our associates have access to programs and resources which allow them to earn designations and certificates, go to association meetings, and attend seminars in an effort to continue to develop their expertise. Within a relatively short period of time, there’s no reason not to be better than when you started here.
What is the culture like at Marsh & McLennan Agency?
We have a work hard, play hard attitude. While the majority of the day is spent focusing on our clients, we do make time to ensure our colleagues feel supported and motivated. Throughout the year, we host fun internal events and activities to show appreciation for our incredible team and nurture the family-feel we take pride in at MMA. Whether it’s a coffee cart, an ice cream social, Customer Service Week, Earth Week, or competing for best Halloween costume, there is always something fun going on in the office.
MMA G.R.O.W. is an internal women’s initiative, which provides mentoring, educational seminars and networking opportunities for our female associates. Our annual fundraising event Rock the Foundation, which benefits the Barney & Barney Foundation, is another opportunity for associates to get involved, have fun and help the community. MMA also promotes team building through department retreats,holiday partiesand volunteering. We pride ourselves on providing high quality service to our clients, while still making time to reward our associates for a job well done.
Has Barney & Barney changed since the Marsh & McLennan Agency Acquisition?
It’s inevitable that we experience some change, but Barney & Barney was already changing before the acquisition. In the six years I’ve been with the company, we doubled in size, added two more offices and almost doubled our revenue. Since the acquisition, I’ve noticed nothing but increased brand visibility, which has helped us continue to attract and hire top talent. We have more resources, more opportunities, and more efficient processes and procedures.
Our management team is passionate about protecting and preserving our culture, because that’s who we are and what makes us different from our competitors. If anything, after the acquisition, we are now part of an even bigger nationwide family of insurance folks who love what they do.
